More re silly speed limits

More re silly speed limits

Reader's letter in EADT on 28 June 2014.  A warning of a dangerous situation on a country road with a 60mph limit received the following response from Suffolk Highways Dept: "Whilst we appreciate your concerns for safety, it is down to individual road users to drive to the road conditions appropriately".

So why is the same attitude not applied to wide straight roads where 30mph limits are imposed?

Ipswich/Kesgrave/Martlesham/Brantham/Felixstowe Speed Limits

Illogical speed limits

Crazy 60 mph limit on narrow country lanes - should be 30 mph.

If it is considered safe to drive along the busy and hazardous Ipswich bypass at 40 mph, surely it does not make sense to impose a 30 mph speed limit on the main road through Kesgrave and Rushmere Common, and through the countryside in Brantham and in many other places where the hazards are much less than on the Ipswich bypass.

The 50 mph limit on the A12 approach to the Martlesham Park and Ride roundabout coming from Woodbridge creates danger as the vast majority of drivers ignore this speed limit.

Moreover, the following article that appeared in the press does not help.

"Chief Inspector ..........., head of roads policing for Suffolk said: “Driving at excessive speeds is a contributing factor in a large number of road traffic collisions and people who speed need to realise that they are not only putting their lives at risk but also the lives of other road users.
You can greatly reduce the chances of doing serious harm if you are travelling at the speed limit designated for the road you’re travelling on."

Surely, this recommendation is misleading as it should read "within the speed limit" because driving "at the speed limit" would be extremely dangerous on most rural roads.

Felixstowe

Glad to see that most of those silly signs on the sea wall at Manor End Felixstowe have been removed after being an eye-sore for so long.
